avalove is a poet who does the surface design of clothing one poem, one metaphor at a time. Proudly started on the streets in soho, nyc!

avalove is a poet self-publishing her work on tees. I view my prints as works of art and my body of clothing as the canvas. Each print is considered a lithograph, hand-printed, and limited edition. Poetry inspires the metaphor of the visual images so often the shirts tell stories. Like a drawing in a journal. Or a photograph in a photo album. Marks some kind of place in time mapped out by image.

avalove designs is about living and being your dream, it's about being the creation and the creator.

avalove believes in buying handmade. Buying with consciousness and promoting business with consciousness that is sweat-shop free, positive, but also, supports someone's dream, and helps keep things person to person and personal. Handmade gear is a part of living the dream: the artist dreams when they make their work, and you buying it, helps support them to live their dream, and you then become a part of that dream, and add to it. It's a wonderful give and take. Each piece then means much more when the value and magic of the work is understood in this way.

Poetry in Motion

Did you ever buy a piece of artwork that made you smile every time you looked at it? One that was just so inspiring to you that you wish you could just take it with you wherever you go to show it off to the world around you? Or did you ever read a poem that really touched you and spoke to you in a way that made you want to go share it with everyone you know? Unfortunately these things that may have much influence on us are often confined to the walls in our home or the pages of a book. Well, avalove is working to change that, one garment at a time. She creates hand-printed, limited edition clothing that work as an outlet for her artistic and poetic creativity. According to Ava, she views her "prints as works of art and my body of clothing as the canvas", each one a lithograph of her original artwork. As a poet, her designs are visualizations of the words she writes, creating wearable art and poetry in one. - Swank show

New York is a town drowning in irony. Faded faux-vintage shirts with semi-witty tongue-in-cheek sayings have taken over the city, and eventually spread from coast-to-coast, speaking to the cynic in all of us. This fall, let your sardonic leanings give way to a little bit of sincerity. Nurse the urban hippy inside with unpretentious pieces from a very non-jaded New Yorker Â Brooklyn poet-turned-designer, avalove.

Peacock plumes, lupin flowers, hummingbirds, and her own poetry are common themes in avalove's designs. Nature-inspired wrap dresses bridge the gap between flower-child and rock star. Want to look a like a modern Janis Joplin without all the heroin, and the crazy? This line is for you. The clothes are smart and funky with a kind of pretty optimism that is increasingly rare in a world knee deep in snark; not surprising, as Avalove's self-professed mission is to create positive, inspiring pieces.

An independent designer, avalove's online store of hand-printed wares is one of those little lighthouses of creativity in a world crowded by merchandising giants with bold-faced names, multiple store locations, and factory-made clothing. Don't get us wrong, a store-bought basic can be a good thing. But these designs, that will make the most cynical city-dweller smile instead of smirk, are even better. - Olivia Purnell
